Industry Studies

Over the past decade, several studies have been carried out which elaborate the importance and benefits of plastic pipe systems:

Design of Buried Plastics Pipe Systems

In 1999, a key technical study was concluded regarding the design of thermoplastic pipe systems. This project resulted in a much better understanding of the flexible behaviour of plastic pipes and their installation aspects. A design graph was developed, predicting the deflection of pipes in practice.

Sponsored by TEPPFA and PlasticsEurope, the project team consulted a wide range of industry experts from across the sector. Leading professors throughout Europe were given the possibility to check their calculations for pipe installation. A steering committee from industry was also set up to oversee and support the work in whatever shape and whatever form that was needed.

SMP Study - Flexible pipes perform better

Antiquated sewer networks in Europe are being sadly neglected. They leak and they lack performance. But how to persuade engineers that these symptoms are caused by non plastic pipes? The Civils Group is convinced that it is now has the diagnosis and more importantly the cure!

Jetting

TEPPFA has produced a brochure to advise maintenance contractors and the market on the subject of jetting. Industry has taken up successfully the creation of a guideline. All types of gravity drain and sewer systems require a regular cleaning regime to ensure top performance. Plastic sewer pipes are no exception although their maintenance requires only minimal attention.

Expected Lifetime of Plastic Pipes

PVC Sewer Pipes - Longer Lifelines for Sustainable Headlines

French version

German version

Signs of our old age may be obvious. But appearances can be deceptive. So how can we trust such signs on face value? A recent Dutch scientific study of PVC sewer pipes proves that age is more than just mind over matter. Our environmental focus could change forever.

Several significant studies regarding the predicted lifetime of plastic pipes have been carried out. A report published in The Netherlands officially confirmed in 2006 that the life span of existing PVC pipes when installed according to the correct conditions is more than 100 years. A similar study has been published regarding the durability of PE pipes and there are other technical references.

Clay Versus Plastics

Some rather inconsistent information is sometimes disseminated about the nature of non-plastic pipes and the nature of plastic pipe systems. TEPPFA has a few convincing arguments of its own that it would like to share… Read the real story regarding durability, diversity, hydraulics and a lot more characteristics.

Recommended Installation

Installation is an important factor for long lasting performance. TEPPFA is preparing an installation guide for plastic sewer pipes. The guide is being developed in two stages: firstly a leaflet explaining briefly good and bad workmanship in the trench and secondly, a small booklet to serve as an additional guide with background information.

The aim is to communicate the correct and recognised installation methods for the performance required from plastic sewer pipe systems.

Plastic Manholes

Plastic manholes and inspection chambers have been applied in sewer networks for the last twenty years. The benefits of plastic manholes and inspection chambers are widely appreciated. In addition to their obviously easy handling, transport and long life advantages, plastic chambers are a lot more resistant to the corrosive gases and products caused by our waste products as they flow through the underground sewer network.
