Does diametric deflection of flexible pipes affect leak tightness?
It has been proven that joints on plastic sewer pipes with up to 10% deflection retain leak tightness.
- The European standards for both solid wall and structured wall sewer pipes require pipe joints to maintain their integrity when the pipe immediately adjacent to a socket is deflected by 10% and the socket is deflected by 5%.
- Under these test conditions the pipe joint must maintain leak tightness under a water pressure of 0.5 bar and a negative air pressure of -0.3 bar.
- This test is designed to demonstrate that even under severe deflection the pipe will not allow exfiltration of effluent or infiltration of ground water if the sewer is located below the level of the ground water table.
- Plastics sewer pipes can also be jointed using fusion techniques. Joints formed in this way perform at least as well as ring seal joints.
