Sewer: Frequently Asked Questions

Is deflection of plastic sewer pipes visible on CCTV?

CCTV can only be used to detect excessive deflection of plastic sewer pipes.

Extensive research projects commissioned by TEPPFA and its member organisations have established the following facts with respect to water jetting of sewers :
  • Although standard CCTV equipment cannot be used to accurately measure the deflection of a plastic sewer pipe, deflections in excess of 10% are easily discernible by visual inspection.

  • It is generally recognised that deflections below 10% do not significantly affect the hydraulic performance of plastic sewer pipes.

  • Performance tests in European product standards for plastic sewer pipes require pipes to maintain their structural integrity when deflected by up to 30%.
