Sewer: Frequently Asked Questions

How does the type of backfill material affect the performance of a plastic sewer pipe?

The type of backfill material can influence the extent of deflection of plastic sewer pipes. Want to know more?

The TEPPFA Buried Pipe Project concluded that the deflection of buried flexible pipes is influenced by the type of backfill material used and the level of compaction achieved.

The chart below shows the predicted levels of deflection after installation relative to the compaction level. The increase in deflection over time is predicted as follows :

Well Compacted Cf = 1.0
Moderate Compaction Cf = 2.0
None (Granular Soils) Cf = 3.0
None (Cohesive Soils) Cf = 4.0
